The end of design is to create a product or system which fulfils a need or requirement, within cost, and using technology at the limits of current capability. The first and most obvious reason why all design must do this is simply because the product is required by the user. The customer wants a good product so that they can do their job better, cheaper, or more cheaply. The second reason why design must do this is that all design must meet appropriate constraints. These constraints may be the resources at the designer’s disposal, or may be the resources which the consumer has at their disposal. Without constraints, the result would be unsatisfactory and the designer would be unable to prevent that. The third reason why design must do this is that the final product is not always predictable. Because of this, it is necessary to plan ahead for contingencies in the final product which may have an adverse effect on performance or other characteristics. This is particularly the case in the case of product development, where technological constraints make the final product unpredictable, so to protect the performance of the product it is necessary to make changes during development. Also, when looking at any large engineering project, there is often scope for unforeseen problems and difficulties. Sometimes, it is impossible to predict these problems in advance, but if these problems are identified early enough they may be resolved before the project goes further. Design is therefore not an end in itself, but rather a means to an end, which helps the designer to create a product. The fourth and final reason why design must do this is that the product or system is often more important than any of the individual designers involved in it. All designers are involved in the creation of a product and so any one of them can point out various problems with the product as it exists at the time. Some of these problems are to do with the product itself, and some are to do with the process of its creation. However, in many cases, the problem is to do with the process itself and the product designer must decide whether to correct it or not. If the design is unsatisfactory, it is important that the designer is aware of the problem and knows what to do about it. This book has been designed to encourage the
